As I sit here on the Eve of 2016 and reminisce the past 365 days, I can’t help but remember all the great things that have happened to me this year and I’m very thankful for the health and love of my entire family. I spend a bunch of time at the end of the year wondering what’s going to happen in the next 366 (Leap Year) days, and one theme keeps popping up in my head… JUST DO IT!
Many have made fun of this video by Shia LeBeouf. It’s kind of cheesy and he has a history of making a fool of himself. However, the message is straight forward and true. Also, no matter your opinion of the man, no one can argue that he hasn’t been successful in his field.
It’s easy to look at someone who has been successful and be awestruck by all of their accomplishments. However, nobody starts at the top of their game. You know the difference between them and many of us searching for how to become successful… They JUST DID IT! They didn’t sit around analyzing everything that could go wrong. Analysis Paralysis is real and can be a killer to many successful ideas. They figured out that they didn’t know everything but were smart enough to overcome obstacles when they arose.
As a real estate developer, one man I’ve studied is Trammell Crow. He didn’t have a plan when he began his real estate career. He was actually working as an accountant for a grain company and simply saw a need for increased warehouse space and jumped in. His ability to JUST DO IT catapulted him into one of the most successful real estate developers this country has ever seen.
I’ve read stories of 80 year old real estate developers who came to this country with $5.00 to their name and now own several million square feet of industrial and commercial property. They figured out that if they just get started they can be successful. They put smart people around them and overcome obstacles that get in the way.
Nike has preached this exact phrase for many years, yet the vast majority of our population still over-thinks and over-analyzes their plans. The fact of the matter is it’s easy to overthink at the expense of doing, but there’s so much value in doing. We have to have confidence in ourselves that we will figure it out along the way. Success follows the bold. Being smart isn’t enough.
My challenge to myself and to you for 2016 is to step out of your comfort zone and whatever it is… JUST DO IT!
